Intro

Thanks to a very rare out-of-the-country business trip (the only other one being in 2009 to Europe), I found myself in Montréal for a weekend, 15 years after the first time I had visited in 1996.  It was time to re-explore this incredible French-speaking metropolis in North America, complete with a boat trip on the St. Laurent River and the best poutine you could hope for.

If you know me at all, you would know that I wouldn’t be happy with just staying in Montréal, so I extended my trip, and took in all the Maritime Provinces of Canada, along with France’s last remaining holding in North America, the fascinating – and very French – island territory of St. Pierre et Miquelon.

After Montréal, I began my trip in beautiful St. John’s, Newfoundland (where I honestly had a bit of trouble understanding the accent of the locals!), and then following my dip into France, continued to the provinces of Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and finally New Brunswick, where I was able to see the Bay of Fundy’s incredible tidal shifts at the Hopewell Rocks, a World-Heritage natural site.  At my final destination of Saint John, New Brunswick’s largest city, I quickly learned to always make sure to spell out the city’s “Saint” to avoid any confusion with the other “St. John(‘s)”!

On this road trip through all the provinces of Maritime Canada, I happen to feature this picture of me in front of a lighthouse in France. Quoi?! That’s because on my way from Saint John to St. John’s, I made a stop at the only remaining French colony in North America, the quaint island territory of St-Pierre et Miquelon.
