Intro

From the Pacific capital of Perú to the Atlantic capital of ‘Carnaval’ – Lima and Rio are easily two of the most beautiful cities on South America’s coasts…  From Machu Picchu’s glorious green fog-covered hills to the outstretched arms of Cristo Redentor – the final two of the ‘New 7 Wonders of the World’ to check off my list…

From the mind-boggling Nazca Lines to festive Cuzco during Inti Raymi;  from lively La Paz to the stunning Lake Titicaca;  from the blindingly white endless expanse of the Salar de Uyuni to the futuristic metropolis of Brasilia — this was truly a journey packed with incredible and unforgettable highlights!

With the obvious crowd-pleasers of Brazil and Perú on the agenda, it was Bolivia that knocked me off my feet — or should I say took my breath away?  La Paz is the highest capital city in the world, and let me tell you — walking up a flight of stairs soon after landing is no joke!  And Potosí, in the south, is even higher — clocking in at an impressive 13,420 feet (4,090 meters)!

Puns aside, Bolivia took my breath away because of its incredible and unexpected diversity.  The people were happy and friendly, the culture refreshingly alive, the natural wonders astounding;  but the cities, wow — each had such a remarkably different

    Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia

Yes, I’m freezing cold out here, wearing my new Peruvian alpaca beanie and sweater, but no — this is not snow. This is Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni, the largest expanse of salt on earth, covering more than 10,000 square kilometers. It’s an eerily beautiful place, and well worth the trek out into the Bolivian Altiplano!
